Myopia, commonly known as nearsightedness, is a refractive error that affects the eye's ability to see distant objects. In individuals with myopia, objects up close are sharp, while those at a distance may appear blurred or lacking focus.

Myopia occurs when the eye has an elongated shape, or the cornea is too steep, causing light rays to focus in front of the retina instead of directly on it. This results in the blurred distance vision characteristic of myopia.

What is Ortho-K, And How Can It Help?

Orthokeratology, or ortho-k, is a non-surgical and reversible vision correction technique that uses specially designed gas-permeable contact lenses to temporarily reshape the cornea — the transparent front part of the eye. This reshaping helps individuals achieve clear vision without needing glasses or contact lenses during the day.

The Ortho-K Process:

  • Custom-Fitted Contact Lenses: Ortho-k lenses are custom-fitted with an Oculus Cartograph, an instrument used to custom-fit each individual based on the specific curvature of their cornea. These lenses are worn during sleep, allowing for gradual reshaping of the cornea and vision correction.
  • Reshaping the Cornea: As you sleep, ortho-k lenses gently exert controlled pressure on various parts of the cornea, gradually reshaping it. This reshaping allows light to be focused onto the retina, resulting in clear vision when removing the lenses in the morning.
  • Daytime Freedom: Upon waking and removing the lenses, individuals experience improved vision throughout the day, often without needing glasses or daytime contact lenses.
